EURUSD W43: A Bearish Structure With an Active Momentum Warning
EURUSD W43: A Bearish Structure With an Active Momentum Warning
The dollar's decline has paused, but EURUSD's short-term recovery still challenges the timing of a bearish view. France's funding stress and the relative-policy debate weigh on the euro, while crowded futures shorts create a counterargument to pressing the same trade. The three-week assessment remains bearish with medium confidence. Daily, weekly and monthly trends point down, yet the price-action component is bullish. Direction and readiness to enter therefore need separate decisions.
The trap in joining an established trade
The trap is to assume that a clear downward trend removes the risk of a rebound. A trader can identify genuine EUR vulnerabilities and still enter a short just as existing sellers reduce exposure. Neither trend agreement nor a negative futures net position proves that the next move will be lower. The bearish framework also contains bullish price, macro and contrarian-positioning components; its overall direction does not erase those disagreements.
At 05:51 UTC on Thursday, 22 October 2026, EURUSD was 1.12381, above weekly VWAP 1.12221 and below weekly TrendSL 1.14465. Source: mt5:EURUSD.sml:1m. This is a timestamped observation, not a live quote.
The momentum warning is already active: existing short exposure warrants reduced size now. Structural invalidation remains pending: a weekly close above TrendSL 1.14465 would invalidate the bearish structure; exit shorts and reassess if that occurs. The weekly closing requirement belongs to structural invalidation, not to the momentum warning.
Rates explain a mechanism, not measured flows
The input records US ten-year nominal yields at 5.12%, two-year yields at 4.79% and ten-year real yields at 2.77%. These describe the US rates backdrop. Comparable German or euro-area yields at compatible times are needed to quantify an international advantage. A US real yield alone is neither a measured US-euro spread nor the cash return earned simply by holding dollars.
Higher relative returns on USD assets could support the currency, but actual cross-border purchases are not established by these observations. Reuters on 22 October described investors waiting for central-bank meetings, with holds expected alongside later tightening expectations. That is market pricing, not an announced decision. A pause in the dollar's decline neither proves a fresh advance nor settles whether the underlying rate expectations have changed.
Cross-market checks start with the reason yields rise
Reuters on 21 October reported French ten-year yields touching 5.002%, the highest since 2002, with a France-Germany spread around 157 basis points. The wider spread reflects additional compensation demanded for French fiscal and political risk. Such a rise is different from yields increasing because investors expect stronger growth. Treating every European yield increase as support for EUR would miss the source of the pressure.
In her 17 October statement, Lagarde described tighter financial conditions slowing growth and reducing energy-price pass-through more than previously projected. She still considered a measured response to the energy shock appropriate. This is prior-week policy context, not a commitment to cut or an assurance that further hikes are excluded. The ECB's response must be compared with the Fed's rather than reduced to a one-sided claim about an inevitable policy gap.
Oil was broadly steady in the later Reuters update on 21 October as diplomatic developments and lower US inventories pulled in different directions. Do not substitute an earlier intraday rally for that later observation. Energy affects import costs, growth and inflation expectations; the FX result depends on the relative policy response. Lower oil could ease Europe's cost burden while also changing expected ECB tightening, so a single oil move cannot determine EURUSD's direction.
DXY can provide context, but its substantial euro component makes an inverse move partly mechanical. Compare dollar behavior against other currencies and matched bond yields before treating the index as independent confirmation. The Fed-assets-minus-TGA-minus-reverse-repo proxy rose $120.15 billion over four weeks to $5,869.6 billion on 14 October. That is US system liquidity context, not measured FX buying or EURUSD order-book depth. It does not establish a currency flow on its own.
Positioning and price have different time horizons
COT CFTC 099741, TFF futures only, report date 2026-10-13: Leveraged Funds held 120,021 long and 188,022 short contracts, leaving a net short position of 68,001. Weekly net positioning fell 23,740 contracts versus 2026-10-06. Its 1.92 percentile within 52 weekly observations places net exposure near the low end of that history. This is a historical rank, not the percentage of traders short. Publication date is unverified; these lagged EUR futures positions are not current spot flows.
The one-week fall in net positioning can reflect reduced longs, additional shorts or both; the net change alone does not identify that decomposition. A historically low net position raises the relevance of reversal risk, but it does not establish forced covering or a squeeze already underway. The framework's contrarian COT contribution is a bullish counterweight within the overall bearish assessment. It is not simply another bearish confirmation.
FXSSI: 66% long / 34% short, collected at 05:50:54 UTC on 22 October. The broker sample leans long by 32 percentage points, giving contrarian bearish context. Collection time is not a separately verified provider timestamp; the sample is not the whole FX market and supplies no independent calibrated sell signal.
Futures funds and retail broker clients are different populations. Their opposite positions do not prove where stops sit or which group must liquidate. Nor can either sample be read as a complete inventory of institutional and retail exposure. The dated observations explain why positioning deserves attention without supplying a target or calibrated reversal probability.
What could strengthen the bullish countercase
Reduced French risk, softer relative US rate expectations or a durable EUR recovery across counterpart currencies could challenge the bearish explanation. A rebound can also develop before those macro changes are fully visible. Price remaining resilient around the developing weekly average would keep the current momentum objection alive. That would be a reason to reassess timing and exposure rather than assume a crowded trade must work immediately.
What would make the bearish case more coherent
Persistent French risk and relative-rate evidence favoring USD would support the existing interpretation. If the current momentum recovery fades and price loses support around the developing weekly average, the objection to new bearish exposure would ease. This watch condition adds no daily or weekly closing rule. A single one-minute observation would still be insufficient to establish sustained acceptance or rejection.
The recorded separation from the weekly average is about 16.0 pips; the structural reference is about 208.4 pips away. Those distances describe the price map, not an account-specific stop or a promised risk-reward ratio. A distant structural boundary does not justify maintaining full exposure while the nearer momentum warning is active.
The practical decision
For traders not yet positioned, waiting for better agreement between price, relative yields and the policy outlook is reasonable. Those already holding shorts have an active instruction to reduce size rather than wait for weekly structural invalidation. Refresh the price and developing levels before publication or execution. Upcoming policy guidance can reshape expectations, but its outcome should not be presumed. The bearish view is an assessment to test against new evidence, not a guarantee that every supporting headline will produce an immediate decline.
